More information

Although baby loons can swim soon after birth, we frequently see them catching rides on their parents' backs. During their first week of life, that's where they spend up to two-thirds of their time.

This helpful ferrying keeps the chicks warm and gives them a chance to rest. It also offers some protection against predators like hungry fish, snapping turtles, gulls, eagles, and crows.

For the first two months, young loons depend on their parents for food. In their third month, chicks acquire these skills themselves and might even learn to fly.
